In-Class Notes Posted!

I have uploaded our in-class notes for units #4 & #5 (which are Trigonometry parts 1 and 2 respectively).  Please look under the resources tab.

Trigonometry Part 2 Test

Monday April 22, 2013

Scheduled for second half of class

Note:

Failure to write a test must be supported with a medical note from your doctor.  I will not accept notes written by parents.  If you fail to provide a medical note for your absence during a test, you will recieve a grade of 0.

Article Assignment

I am uploading two articles from the book The Universe in Zero Words. If your knowledge mark on test #3 was between 0-20/35, you will have the opportunity to raise your knowledge mark by a maximum of 5 points with a one page reflection (single spaced) on an article of your choice.  I am willing to add an extra 2 points (in addition to the 5) for anyone who writes a  thought provoking  relfection.  Just so you know, if you want to engage a reader in a discussion around mathematical ideas, you might want to consider the following points:

(1)Your reflection must come from your analysis and interpretation of the readings, not from somebody else.  DO NOT PLAGARIZE!!  Plagarism is basically stealing somone’s ideas and claiming them as your own, without any reference to the original author.

Note: any form of plagarism could result in the dismissal from night school.

(2) Assume that the person who is reading your article is a non-expert in the subject of mathematics.  Write with simplicity in mind.

(3)Understand what you are reading before you write your reflection.  If you need to look up a mathematical term, or look into the history of a mathematician, then consult a reliable source and document it in your reflection.

(4)Great refelections include a series of questions (that come from your personal understanding of math).  Think of mathematics as a language that we use to better understand the nature of reality itself! How do these equations look like? What do they communicate? Do they accurately describe what is actually happening in nature/universe? These are some examples of questions I have asked myself over the course of my personal mathematical research.

I am very interested to see what your questions are.

Here are your articles (please choose one):

DUE DATE: Saturday March 30, 2013

TIME: no later than 12 (noon)

Note: Late assignments will not be accepted.

REVISED NEWS UPDATE

By closer inspection, I noticed that most people performed poorly on both the application and thinking sections of test #3.  Hence, I will be providing you with an in-class assignment (you cannot use your notes) that will be due at the end of the first half of class (tonight). You will not get your tests back at the beginning of class.  You will be given the assignment to boost both your application and thinking sections of test #3.

NEWS UPDATE!!

I noticed that many people were struggling on the test last night, so I decided to give you guys another chance to improve the quality of your work/solutions.  Tomorrow, you will be given the first 45mins to look over your tests and make any corrections that are necessary. You will be allowed to use your in-class notes.

Have a great day!

Test #3 Rational Functions/Journal Notes

Test #3 Rational Functions will be held on:

 Mon Mar 25, 2013

The first half of class will be reserved for our review (or take-up of any questions you guys might have).

Also, check under Resources.  I have uploaded our in-class notes for unit #2.

Good luck studying, and have a great weekend!
